Smoking and Asthma

29 June 2010

While it's now well recognised that smoking is harmful, you may not know that cigarette smoking is particularly bad for people with asthma. It can make asthma worse and seriously damage already vulnerable lungs.

Passive smoking (breathing in other people's smoke) is just as harmful, especially for babies and children. Keep your home and car smoke-free, and ask visitors to smoke outside away from the windows.

Cigarette smoke is a major trigger for asthma. Smoking:

  • Makes your asthma worse
  • May increase your asthma symptoms
  • Makes asthma medicine work less effectively
  • Increases the chances of permanently damaging your airways
