Home Living with Asthma & Allergy Your Guide Spring 2009 Time to Spring clean

Time to Spring clean

Spring cleaning shouldn’t happen only in spring - keeping your home clean all year round goes a long way to reducing many of the common asthma and allergy triggers.

House dust mites (those horrible little microscopic creatures) are undoubtedly the most common trigger of asthma & allergy symptoms in the home.

Fight dust mites in the bedroom by:

  • washing sheets and pillow cases weekly in water hotter than 55 degrees
  • opening curtains and airing bedding in the sunshine
  • covering mattresses, doonas and pillows with dust mite covers

Around the house be sure to:

  • use a damp or electrostatic cloth to dust all hard surfaces, including floors. This dramatically reduces the dust in the air when cleaning
  • consider using an asthma & allergy sensitive vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter
  • clean blinds and curtains regularly. It’s tedious, but of great benefit in reducing asthma and allergies
  • keep rooms dry and well ventilated. Good insulation helps make your home comfortable for you, not the dust mites
