Why is asthma such a problem?

Asthma is a disease of the airways, which carry air to our lungs. With asthma, the muscles in the airways tighten and the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and narrower – providing less space for air to flow in and out.

Most people with asthma only have symptoms when they inhale a ‘trigger’ caused by things like dust mites, pets or mould, or when they catch a cold or the flu.
